A fatigued or cracked spring disc makes the piston return slowly and the clutch fail to release fully, so the plates drag, the gearbox runs hot and the machine may try to creep even in neutral. A spring disc loses force over time, so if a clutch pack slips or drags, the spring discs are renewed even if the plates look unworn. Inspect the new disc for cracks and burrs before fitting.

Fitting

When assembling the pack, fit the spring disc in the direction and order shown in the service manual, stack the oil-soaked plates and measure the pack clearance. Test the piston movement with low-pressure air. After the gearbox is assembled, check the clutch pressures and shifts. In the first hours after the repair, watch the transmission oil temperature and level, and do the first oil and filter change earlier than usual.
