Oil filters differ in thread, seal diameter, filter paper structure and bypass valve opening pressure, and a filter that looks similar may have a bypass pressure unsuited to the engine, so the filter is chosen by part number. Many oil filters also have an anti-drain valve, which stops oil draining from the filter when the engine is stopped so that oil pressure builds quickly at start-up. The filter comes new, and its part number and seal diameter are compared with the old one.

According to sources, 320/B4394 is an engine oil filter with an M27x2 thread, 170 mm tall and 95 mm in diameter, used on JCB 3CX, 4CX and 5CX backhoe loaders and 531-70, 533-105, 535-125, 540-140, 540-180 and 542-70 telehandlers. Fitting

The oil filter is changed together with the engine oil, with the engine warm, since warm oil drains better and carries the dirt with it. Remove the old filter, clean the seal face and check that the old seal has not stayed on the housing. Lubricate the new filter's seal with clean engine oil, screw it on by hand and tighten by the amount the maker specifies. Start the engine, check that the oil pressure lamp goes out and there is no leak around the filter, then top up the oil level. Check the engine oil level with the dipstick a few minutes after stopping, with the machine on level ground; it must be between the marks. Too much oil is as harmful as too little, causing foaming and seal leaks.
