Column switch 701/80296 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines. The card also lists 701/80165, 332/Y6914.

The lever of a column switch is used hundreds of times a day, and wear of its contacts is natural. Dust and moisture in the cab speed up contact oxidation, so the condition of the cab door and window seals also affects the switch's life. If the switch's protective boot is torn, dust gets in and the lever can stick. After replacing the switch, try every position in turn and check that the related functions work correctly. A fault in a direction switch is not put off, since the machine could move in an unexpected direction.

Compatibility

According to sources, this is the left-hand column switch, controlling forward/reverse selection and the horn. The catalogue also has the aftermarket version and OEM version of this part. Other parts are in Switches.

Fitting

Before the change, switch off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative if needed. Remove the connector by pressing its latch, never by pulling the wires. After fitting the new part, push the clean, dry connector fully home and check that the latch has clicked into place. After reconnecting the battery, check the function and the instrument panel.

Section C of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-15) gives the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loader wiring diagram in two versions: one for machines built up to May 2009 with analogue instruments and one for machines from May 2009 with the digital instrument panel. On the earlier machines the main machine circuit takes two sheets, with separate circuits for the gearboxes and options; the later circuit runs to 15 sheets. Below are the main sheets, the component keys and a guide to reading wire numbers.
