Starter 12 V 4.2 kW JCB Dieselmax 320/09346, aftermarket STI4264UL

Aftermarket starter STI4264UL is an AZF4224-type 12 V 4.2 kW gear-reduction starter that replaces JCB 320/09346, 320/09022, 320/09144, 320/09452 and 320/09035. The photos show a starter with an aluminium reduction housing.

The starter turns the engine over through the flywheel ring gear. This is a 12 V, 4.2 kW gear-reduction starter: the planetary reduction gives high torque from a smaller motor and helps cold starting. The drive pinion has 11 teeth and rotation is clockwise. A failing starter clicks, cranks slowly, fails to engage the ring gear or keeps turning after the engine fires; the battery, cables and earth connection should be checked first.

Compatibility

The starter is listed for JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders and Loadall machines with Dieselmax and Ecomax engines from 2005. Compare the mounting flange and pinion tooth count with the old starter. For comparison there is the Mahle OEM starter and the aftermarket unit IMS101848. Engine electrics are in starters.

Fitting

Disconnect the battery negative before removal. When fitting the new starter, clean the mounting face, tighten the bolts evenly and connect the main and trigger cables to the right terminals. If starters fail repeatedly, also check the starter solenoid and battery charging.
