A starter's life is directly linked to starting habits: turning the key to start again with the engine running damages the pinion and ring gear. Hard starting (fuel system faults, low compression, cold-start problems) makes the starter crank for a long time and overheat, so on a hard-starting engine the cause is dealt with first. Make sure the protective covers are in place so water and mud cannot get into the starter body.

According to the product cards, this is a 24 V, 4 kW, 11-tooth starter with clockwise (CR) rotation; the cards list JCB JS200, JS205, JS210, JS220, JS330 and JZ235 excavators. Fitting

Before removing the starter, disconnect the battery negative so the permanent positive feed on the starter cable cannot short. Label and remove the cables, then undo the mounting bolts. Fit the new starter with its flange and the seat in the flywheel housing cleaned, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Connect the main and control cables clean and tight, since a loose connection heats up and makes the starter turn weakly. After reconnecting the battery, start the engine and check that the starter works quietly and without delay.
