Brake proximity sensor 701/80629 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.

The brake proximity sensor is an inductive sensor that detects the brake pedal position without contact. According to sources, 701/80629 is the brake proximity sensor of JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders and Loadall telehandlers with two jobs: lighting the brake lamps and sending the transmission a declutch signal. Declutch cuts drive when the brake is pressed during loading, so engine power goes to the hydraulics and brake wear is reduced. A faulty sensor leaves the brake lamps dark or permanently lit and stops the transmission declutching, so the machine keeps pushing forward. The product card lists the sensor for Perkins-engined machines; the cable has bare ends.

Fitting

Screw the sensor into the pedal bracket by its threaded body and lock it with two lock nuts, turning the nuts until the signal changes correctly between released and pressed pedal. Connect the wire ends with terminals or a connector and insulate the joints with heat-shrink. After the change, test the brake lamps and the declutch function.

JCB 3CX and 4CX wiring diagrams before and after May 2009: sheets and component keys
Section C of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-15) gives the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loader wiring diagram in two versions: one for machines built up to May 2009 with analogue instruments and one for machines from May 2009 with the digital instrument panel. On the earlier machines the main machine circuit takes two sheets, with separate circuits for the gearboxes and options; the later circuit runs to 15 sheets. Below are the main sheets, the component keys and a guide to reading wire numbers.
