Shim washers are made of hardened steel and carry the side loads of the joint. Rusty or crushed shims are not reused. Keeping shims of several thicknesses in stock lets a joint be adjusted quickly on site. The inside diameter is chosen to suit the pin and the outside diameter to suit the eye face, as too small an outside diameter digs into the edge.
