Differential assembly 448/23400 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines. On the product card the differential is listed for the rear axle, while sources list the number as a front axle differential. Compare the axle type and gears with the old differential.

The differential shares engine torque between the two axle shafts while letting the inner and outer wheels turn at different speeds in corners. On backhoe loaders and telehandlers it works with heavy loads, in mud and with frequent changes of direction. Worn differential gears or casing cause clicking in turns, knocking under load and metal particles in the axle oil. A damaged differential can ruin the crown wheel and pinion too, so it is repaired early. In a differential repair the gears, washers and casing are assessed together.

Compatibility

According to the product card, the part number is 448/23400. Fit is confirmed by the part number and the machine serial number. Other parts are in Rear axle.

Fitting

The differential is changed with the axle opened; because it affects the crown wheel and pinion setting, the work is done with measurements to the service manual. Set the differential bearing preload and the crown wheel backlash, check the contact pattern and torque and lock the crown wheel bolts. Renew the seals and gaskets and fill the axle with the specified oil type and quantity. The part comes new. Before the axle is reassembled, lubricate all parts with clean axle oil; refit the shims in their original positions or select them again by measurement.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check
The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
