Dowels are small parts, but they are needed for axle joints to line up correctly: a joint assembled without a dowel or with a worn one lets the parts shift, so the bearings and seals run off-centre. The dowels removed during an axle repair are therefore always checked, and crushed or burred ones are renewed. The dowel is chosen by part number with the same diameter and length as the old one. Dowel wear usually shows that the joint has been working loose.

Fitting

Dowels are inspected whenever the joint is dismantled and renewed if crushed, burred or worn. Tap the new dowel gently and squarely into its bore and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. The dowel is chosen by part number, since its diameter and length decide the accuracy of the joint. The dowel comes new; clean its bore before fitting and check that no burrs remain. Look over the joint's bolts and washers too.
