Plates are chosen by part number according to outer and inner diameter, thickness and tooth count, and friction and counter plates are different parts. When a clutch pack is rebuilt, all the plates in the pack are replaced together, the piston seals renewed and the transmission oil and filter changed. Steel counter plates can warp or discolour from heat, and a blued plate is a sign of severe overheating.

Fitting

Soak new friction plates in clean transmission oil before fitting. Stack the plates in their original order and check the pack clearance against the service manual. After assembly, fill the transmission with the specified oil and test the gear changes under light load. The plates come new and are stored in their packaging in a dry, clean place. Before fitting, check that they are flat, their teeth free of burrs and the friction surface undamaged. Inspect the clutch piston, return springs and the slots in the clutch drum the plates slide in, since stepped slots stop the plates moving freely and make the clutch drag. After the repair, measure the transmission pressures to the service manual.
