Quickhitch cylinder 401/L0100 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines. The card also lists 333/C8277, 903/20446, 332/C0190.

A hydraulic cylinder turns oil pressure from the pump into straight-line movement and force. A complete cylinder is made up of the barrel, piston, rod, gland and seals, and it comes ready to fit. In a double-acting cylinder, oil fed to one side pushes the rod out and oil fed to the other side pulls it in. Worn piston seals cause internal leakage and creep under load, and a worn rod seal leaks along the rod. A scratched or bent rod soon ruins the seals. Replacing the whole cylinder is the quickest fix when the barrel is scored, the rod is bent or the chrome is lifting. Check the pins and bushes at the same time, since a worn pin damages the eyes of the new cylinder. The cylinder is chosen by part number.

Compatibility

The cylinder moves the locking pin of the quickhitch so attachments can be coupled and released from the cab. Other parts are in JCB hydraulic cylinders.

Fitting

Clean and grease the pins and bushes and renew any that are worn. After tightening the hose connections, move the cylinder slowly and check the joints for leaks.

JCB 3CX and 4CX Dipper Ram Creep: Causes, Ram Creep Tests and Repair
If the dipper of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader drops on its own under load, there are three possible causes: a leaking piston seal in the ram, spool leakage in the excavator valve section, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV) in that section. The JCB service manual gives a test procedure that identifies the culprit before the ram is removed and stripped. Below are the test sequence, the permitted creep and the repair rules from Section E of service manual 9803/3290.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulic Pressure: Settings, Pressure Testing and Causes of Low Pressure
On JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders with a gear pump, the working pressure of the hydraulic system is limited by the main relief valve in the loader valve: 236–241 bar on machines up to serial number 964124 and 248–252 bar on machines from serial number 964125 (standard and high-pressure hydraulics). It is checked with a 0–400 bar pressure gauge connected to the loader valve test point, with the engine at 1500 rev/min and the oil warmed to 50 °C. Below are the settings, the test procedure and the reasons why pressure drops, taken from the JCB service manual (Section E).

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulics: Circuit Diagrams, Pumps and Relief Valve Pressures
Section E of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-14) deals with the hydraulic system of the JCB 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. It brings together technical data for the pumps and valve blocks, hydraulic circuits for machines of different build years, valve operation, fault finding tables, and the procedures for pressure testing and for overhauling the pump, valves and rams. The section PDF runs to 302 pages.

Cylinder drift on a JCB 3CX/4CX: the cylinder, the spool or the ARV
If the boom or bucket creeps down under load, oil is escaping from the «locked» side of a cylinder. There are three causes: a worn piston seal, leakage past the control valve spool, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV). Here is how to find the culprit before buying parts and how much drift is normal. The data comes from the JCB service manual for 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.
