For the JCB 4CX backhoe loader: steering cylinder barrel 557/70014, an aftermarket part.

To replace the barrel, remove the cylinder from the machine, undo the gland nut and pull the rod and piston out of the barrel. Remove the piston nut to take the piston and gland off the rod, then clean and measure every part. Oil the parts with their new seals in clean oil, fit them into the new barrel and tighten the nuts to the specified torque. The pipe and ports on the barrel must line up with the machine's hoses, so compare the new barrel side by side with the old one. Work in a clean place, since sand or swarf inside the cylinder can damage the new seals on the very first stroke. After the repair, measure the closed length and stroke and compare them with the old figures. Tighten the piston nut and gland to the torques in the service data, since a piston nut that works loose causes serious damage inside the cylinder. The barrel comes painted; touch up any paint scratched during fitting to prevent corrosion. Choose the barrel by part number and compare it with the old one.

JCB 3CX and 4CX Dipper Ram Creep: Causes, Ram Creep Tests and Repair
If the dipper of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader drops on its own under load, there are three possible causes: a leaking piston seal in the ram, spool leakage in the excavator valve section, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV) in that section. The JCB service manual gives a test procedure that identifies the culprit before the ram is removed and stripped. Below are the test sequence, the permitted creep and the repair rules from Section E of service manual 9803/3290.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulic Pressure: Settings, Pressure Testing and Causes of Low Pressure
On JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders with a gear pump, the working pressure of the hydraulic system is limited by the main relief valve in the loader valve: 236–241 bar on machines up to serial number 964124 and 248–252 bar on machines from serial number 964125 (standard and high-pressure hydraulics). It is checked with a 0–400 bar pressure gauge connected to the loader valve test point, with the engine at 1500 rev/min and the oil warmed to 50 °C. Below are the settings, the test procedure and the reasons why pressure drops, taken from the JCB service manual (Section E).

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulics: Circuit Diagrams, Pumps and Relief Valve Pressures
Section E of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-14) deals with the hydraulic system of the JCB 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. It brings together technical data for the pumps and valve blocks, hydraulic circuits for machines of different build years, valve operation, fault finding tables, and the procedures for pressure testing and for overhauling the pump, valves and rams. The section PDF runs to 302 pages.

Cylinder drift on a JCB 3CX/4CX: the cylinder, the spool or the ARV
If the boom or bucket creeps down under load, oil is escaping from the «locked» side of a cylinder. There are three causes: a worn piston seal, leakage past the control valve spool, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV). Here is how to find the culprit before buying parts and how much drift is normal. The data comes from the JCB service manual for 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.
