The pre-filter and water separator remove water and large particles ahead of the main filter, and the collected water is drained regularly through the drain screw at the bottom of the bowl. Water causes corrosion and loss of lubrication in diesel pumps, so draining the separator is especially important in humid climates and after long periods of standing. Cartridge elements fit inside a housing and are changed together with their seals.

Fitting

Clean around the filter before the change. Wet the new filter's seals with clean fuel; tighten a spin-on filter by hand, or fit a cartridge element into its housing with new seals. Then bleed the system with the hand primer, start the engine and check the joints for leaks. When changing the fuel filter, also assess how clean the fuel from the tank is, and clean the tank if the filter clogs often. Do not pre-fill the new filter with fuel, as dirt could get onto the clean side.
