Turbocharger 320/06047 JCB Dieselmax 444, genuine

Genuine JCB turbocharger 320/06047 for the Tier 2 versions of the Dieselmax 444 engine; the card also lists 320/04047, 320/06079 and the Garrett number 762931-5001S. The photos show a Garrett GT2256S unit supplied by JCB.

The turbine wheel is driven by exhaust energy, and the compressor wheel on the same shaft pushes air into the engine. On these Garrett GT2256S units boost pressure is limited by a wastegate with a pneumatic actuator; the photos show the actuator and its pressure hose. A failing turbocharger shows as loss of power, black or blue smoke, whistling, oil in the intake or exhaust and play in the shaft. Most failures come from oil starvation, dirty oil or dust passing the air filter; these causes must be cleared before a new unit is fitted.

Compatibility

Used on 68–74 kW Tier 2 Dieselmax 444 engines in JCB backhoe loaders and Loadall machines; check that the engine plate shows the SB code. The catalogue also has the Garrett OEM turbo and an aftermarket turbo under this number. If only the centre section has failed, the turbo cartridge 433289-5284S is available; other parts are in JCB Dieselmax engine.

Fitting

Before fitting, the oil feed and drain pipes are cleaned or replaced, and the turbo is primed with clean engine oil through the oil inlet. Engine oil, the oil filter and the air filter are changed, and flange gaskets are never reused. On first start the engine idles for a few minutes and the joints are checked for leaks.
