Tooth count and inside diameter depend on the flywheel type; the wrong ring will not mesh properly with the pinion. Wear usually concentrates in a few zones where the engine most often stops. Check the starter pinion when the ring gear is replaced. Ring gear wear usually comes from long cranking or from the pinion starting to turn before it is fully engaged. A metallic grinding when starting, the starter spinning freely or the engine refusing to crank at one position all call for a check of the ring gear. It is replaced with the flywheel removed from the engine. The tooth count is given in the table.

Fitting

Remove the old ring by cutting or heating. Heat the new ring evenly and seat it on the flywheel with the chamfer towards the starter; it grips as it cools. Clean the flywheel seat beforehand.
