Starter solenoid MSX 924 is an aftermarket part for the JCB JS crawler excavators. The card also lists 16.915.546.

The starter solenoid is the electromagnetic switch on the starter motor: when the key is turned it pulls in its plunger, pushes the starter pinion to the flywheel and closes the starter's heavy-current contacts. According to the product card, this solenoid is linked to the Mahle numbers MSX 924 and 16.915.546 and listed for AZE4165-type starters, with JCB JS excavators given on the card. Burnt contacts make the starter fail now and then or just click, in which case the solenoid can be replaced instead of the whole starter. The solenoid has separate pull-in and hold-in windings: the pull-in winding draws the plunger in quickly, and the hold-in winding keeps it there while the starter runs. If the hold-in winding has burnt out, the plunger pulls in and is released at once, and the starter chatters. The solenoid is chosen by comparing its fixing bolts and terminal positions with the old one.

Fitting

Before removing the solenoid, disconnect the battery negative and label the cables. Screw the solenoid to the starter body with the plunger tip correctly engaged in the fork. After connecting the cables and battery, test the starter.
