Brake friction disc 188710-150 is an aftermarket part for the backhoe loaders with Carraro axles. This is the friction-lined disc of the wet disc brake.

In oil-immersed axle brakes the friction plates are stacked alternately with steel counter plates, and the brake piston presses them together to slow the wheel. Over time the friction plates get thinner and the grooves on their surface disappear; worn plates lengthen the stopping distance, increase pedal travel and make the brake run hot. Overheated plates glaze and lose braking power. Brake life on heavy machines is extended when the operator uses engine braking and a low gear on descents.

Fitting

The plates are stacked in their original order with the brake housing open, taking care not to mix up the friction and steel plates. Renew the housing gasket, fill the axle with the specified oil and test and bed in the brakes at low speed. The plates come new; check the number of plates in the set for each side of the axle against the service manual. Keep the friction surfaces free of anything but oil and do not handle them with dirty hands. If the brake piston seals leak, the plates can be contaminated with brake fluid, so the piston seals are checked too.
