A brake cylinder is the element of a hydraulic brake system that either generates pressure or turns it into mechanical force. The piston inside the body is sealed by rubber cups and moves under pedal force or under pressure from the line. Over time the seals harden and wear, leading to fluid leaks, a soft pedal, late brake application or weaker braking at one wheel. If the dust boot is torn, dirt gets into the cylinder and scores the bore. After any brake repair, the fluid level and pedal height are watched for a few days; a falling level or a pedal that sinks again shows that a leak remains elsewhere. Cylinders for the left and right sides of one axle are often renewed together so that the braking force stays equal on both sides.
