A brake cylinder fault usually develops slowly, and the operator gets used to the change in pedal feel. Early signs are a pedal that goes a little lower every day, brakes that recover after pumping, a falling reservoir level or oily dirt building up around the cylinder. When these signs appear, the cylinder is checked at once: the brake system is responsible for stopping the machine safely, so the repair is not put off. After any brake repair, the fluid level and pedal height are watched for a few days; a falling level or a pedal that sinks again shows that a leak remains elsewhere. Cylinders for the left and right sides of one axle are often renewed together so that the braking force stays equal on both sides.
