The nitrogen pre-charge pressure falls over time. With less pressure the accumulator stores less oil, the low brake pressure warning comes on more often and fewer brake applications are available with the engine stopped. If the diaphragm tears, gas mixes with the oil and the accumulator no longer holds pressure. Brake accumulators are therefore checked at intervals, and the pre-charge pressure is measured with proper equipment. Accumulators are charged with nitrogen only, as using air or oxygen is dangerous.

Fitting

Before removing the accumulator, stop the engine and press the pedal repeatedly to release the pressure in the brake circuit. Clean the thread, use a new seal and tighten the accumulator to the specified torque. After fitting, check for leaks and that pressure builds.
