During digging they cut the sides of the trench, keep the bucket width and protect the side plates from wear. Left and right side cutters are mirror images and are not interchangeable. A worn side cutter leaves the side plate unprotected, and repairing a worn side plate costs far more than replacing the cutter. Side cutter wear also shows in the quality of the trench walls and the loss of bucket width: a worn cutter digs a narrower trench that has to be trimmed again for pipe or cable. When a cutter is replaced, the lower edge of the bucket side plate is checked too, as a worn side plate will not let the new cutter seat properly and the bolts will be overloaded.
