An inner tube is the rubber ring that holds the air in tube-type tyres. The tube size must match the tyre size (for example 16.9-28) and the rim diameter (R28): a tube that is too big folds and chafes, while one that is too small is overstretched, thins and bursts. The valve is the inflation point, and a leaking valve lets the wheel go down slowly. When a tyre is replaced, the inner tube is usually renewed as well. The valve core and cap are checked too, so that the wheel does not lose pressure.
