Planetary hub carrier 450/10216 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. This part is the body of the planetary hub carrier.

The planetary hub carrier is the outer part of the final reduction (planetary gearbox) at the axle end: it carries the planet gears and the wheel studs and passes the axle shaft's torque to the wheel at reduced speed. Because it takes heavy loads and shocks, the stud holes, planet pin bores and seal faces can wear or crack over time. A damaged carrier causes oil leaks, misalignment of the planet gears and loose wheel studs.

Compatibility

According to sources, numbers 450/10216 and 450/12401 are superseded by 458/M4230; the 5-stud planetary hub carrier is used on JCB 3CX, 3DX and 4CX and 214-217 backhoe loaders. The catalogue also has the genuine version (planetary hub), aftermarket version and genuine version (hub carrier with gears) of this part. Other parts are in Reduction gears.

Fitting

For the change, remove the wheel and drain the planetary gearbox oil. Renew the gasket or O-ring between the carrier and the axle casing and tighten the bolts to the specified torque in a cross pattern. Fill the planetary with oil of the type and quantity in the service manual; after refitting the wheel, torque the nuts and check them again after a short period of work.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check

The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
