Crown wheel and pinion 458/70246 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. The set's ratio is 13/33.

The crown wheel and pinion turn the drive from the propshaft through 90 degrees, pass it to the differential and provide the axle's main reduction. The two gears are machined and matched together, so they are always replaced as a set; a new pinion with an old crown wheel will not give the correct contact pattern and will soon become noisy. The gear ratio (pinion and crown wheel teeth) decides the axle's and machine's speed and pulling character, so the new set must have the same ratio as the old one.

Fitting

Fitting a crown wheel and pinion is precise work needing measuring tools and should be done by an experienced workshop. Pinion depth is set with shims and backlash with the differential bearing adjustment, then the tooth contact pattern is checked with marking compound. Pinion bearing preload and pinion nut torque are set to the service manual. After assembly, fill the axle with the specified oil and check for whine and heat during the first hours.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check

The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
