The gears are chosen by part number according to tooth count, module and spline form, and front and rear versions of the same axle may use different gears. The planetary oil is changed with the type and at the interval the maker specifies, since a low oil level wears the teeth quickly. After new gears are fitted, the first oil change can be done earlier.

Fitting

For the change, remove the wheel, drain the planetary oil and take off the hub carrier. Fit the gears with their pins and bearings the right way round, making sure the sun gear circlip seats properly. Renew the gaskets, tighten the bolts to the specified torque and fill the planetary with the specified oil. The gear comes new; before fitting, check the teeth for burrs or impact marks. Hold the planet gear needles in place with grease during assembly.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check

The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
