Axle tube (arm) 458/20762 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 4CX backhoe loaders.

The axle tube (arm) runs from the differential housing to the wheel end and carries the axle shaft inside it, with the planetary gearbox and hub at its end. The tube carries the machine's weight and shocks; if it bends the wheel angle is lost, the bearings and seals run off-centre and the tyres wear unevenly. A cracked tube loses oil and can break under heavy load, so it is replaced rather than repaired.

Compatibility

According to the product card, 458/20762 (458/20763) is the axle tube of the JCB 4CX backhoe loader; fit is confirmed by the machine serial number. Other parts are in Rear axle.

Fitting

The tube is chosen by part number for the axle type and side, and two- and four-wheel-drive versions may use different tubes. During the change, the axle shaft, bearings, seals and planetary gearbox are moved to the new tube; clean the joint faces, renew the gaskets and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Then fill the axle with the specified oil and check the wheel alignment. When the tube is replaced, also check the axle shaft splines and seal surface, since a worn shaft soon ruins the seal in the new tube. After filling with oil, check the joint faces for leaks.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check
The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
