The breather is cleaned at service and checked that it works, and a broken or blocked one is replaced. It is chosen by part number with the same thread and type as the old one. When washing the machine, do not aim a pressure jet at the breather, as water can get into the axle. The breather is small but important for the life of the axle seals.

Fitting

Clean around the old breather before removing it. Screw in the new one by hand and tighten it to the specified torque, taking care not to overtighten plastic-bodied breathers. After fitting, check the axle oil level and look for leaks at the seals. The breather comes new. If the axle is overfilled, oil can escape through the breather, so the axle is never filled above the level in the service manual. Fit the breather with its opening facing up and protected from mud splash. On axles with leaking seals, check the seals again after the breather is changed, and renew any seals damaged by the pressure. When washing the axle, do not aim the pressure washer directly at the breather, or water may get inside.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Rear Axle Overheating: Causes and What to Check

The rear axle of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader runs hotter than the front axle by design: it houses the oil-immersed service brakes, one multi-plate brake pack on each half shaft. A warm axle casing after a shift is therefore normal. It becomes a concern when the axle gets very hot after an ordinary road run, the machine feels as if it is dragging, there is a smell of burnt oil from the axle, or oil starts leaking past the seals. The usual cause is brake drag: the service brakes or the park brake are not releasing fully. Below, based on the JCB service manual, is what to check and in what order.
