Kingpin taper bearing 031-0426 CAT, aftermarket

Kingpin taper bearing 031-0426 is an aftermarket part for the Caterpillar backhoe loaders. According to the product card, this taper bearing is the axle kingpin bearing.

The bearing is chosen by part number and standard bearing designation, since a bearing with the same outer dimensions but a different load rating or contact angle upsets the axle setting. Preload matters on taper roller bearings: too much preload overheats the bearing and shortens its life, while too little leaves play and shock in the gear mesh. After a bearing change the setting is therefore made with measurements, renewing the shims if necessary.

Fitting

The bearing is changed in clean conditions; take the new bearing out of its packaging only at fitting and do not wipe off the protective oil. Press it into its housing or onto its shaft only with a suitable driver and only through the ring that has the interference fit; the rollers and cage must never be struck. On taper roller bearings the cone and the cup are replaced together. After fitting, set the bearing preload or clearance by the method in the machine's service manual and top up the axle oil to the specified level. The bearing is chosen by comparing its number and dimensions (bore, outside diameter and width) with the old one. During the first hours of work after the change, feel the axle casing around the bearing: excessive heat indicates too much preload, and the adjustment must be redone.
