Transmission / axle shaft 459/M4156 is an aftermarket part for the JCB machines.

This is a splined steel shaft in a transmission or axle that carries gears, clutch packs or drive parts and transmits torque. The bearing and seal journals are precision ground, and the splines engage the gears and hubs. Worn splines cause play and knocking, and wear at the bearing seats lets the bearings spin and overheat. A shaft with stepped splines, cracks or heat discoloration must not be used; overheating marks point to a lubrication problem, and a new shaft fitted without curing it will also be damaged.

Fitting

On assembly, clean the shaft journals, press the bearings on with a suitable tool and renew the seals. Blow out any oil passages with compressed air. After assembly, fill the transmission or axle with the specified oil and check for noise and leaks in operation. Renew all circlips and washers on the shaft, since they set the axial position of its gears and bearings. During assembly, check that the gears slide on the splines without binding and the bearings are fully seated.
