Clutch gear 449/10003 JCB, aftermarket

For the JCB machines: clutch gear 449/10003, an aftermarket part. According to the product card, this gear is used in a transmission clutch.

The gear is chosen by part number with the same tooth count, module and hub design, as transmissions of the same family use different ratios. If one of a meshing pair is badly damaged, assess its partner too, since a new gear running with an old worn one is noisy and wears early. Also find the cause of the gear damage, since unless low or dirty oil, worn bearings or shock loads are dealt with, a new gear will soon fail the same way.

Fitting

On assembly, clean the gear, shaft splines and bearings and renew any circlips and washers. Check that the gear faces the right way on the shaft and measure the end float. After assembly, fill the gearbox with the specified oil and test it in all gears. The oil holes and bush surface in the gear hub must be clean, since poor lubrication wears the hub and lets the gear rock on its shaft. Fit the gear the right way round by its markings and line up any matching marks. During the first hours after the change, watch the gearbox noise and temperature.
