The coolant level is checked at the expansion tank with the engine cold; the tank is not opened on a hot engine, because hot fluid under pressure can cause burns. The change interval is given in the operator manual: over time the additives are used up, and the fluid, while still protecting against freezing, stops protecting against corrosion. Cloudy or brown coolant, or coolant with traces of oil, is a reason to check the system. Coolant is added only from clean containers through a clean funnel, and an opened pack is closed tightly. Use
