Extending dipper cylinder barrel 556/70339 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.

A cylinder barrel is the steel tube with a precisely finished bore in which the piston works. The barrel carries the mounting eye or trunnions, the ports and, on most cylinders, a pipe along the body that takes oil to the rod side. The barrel is replaced when the bore is deeply scored, dented by an impact or the eye is worn; a scored bore soon ruins the piston seal and the cylinder starts to leak past under load. When the barrel is renewed, the old rod, piston and gland can be reused if they are in good order, while the seal kit is always replaced. That makes a barrel a cheaper repair than a complete cylinder. Corrosion in the bore also damages the seals, and machines that have stood idle for a long time often show rust marks in the barrel. When the new barrel is fitted, check the bush in the mounting eye too and renew it if worn. Choose the barrel by part number and compare it with the old one.

Compatibility

The barrel belongs to the extending dipper cylinder. Other parts are in JCB hydraulic cylinders.

Fitting

Do not use sharp tools when fitting the seals; fitting cones and clean oil help the seals go in without damage. Check the lip direction of the new seals against the old ones, since a seal fitted the wrong way round leaks at the first pressure.

JCB 3CX and 4CX Dipper Ram Creep: Causes, Ram Creep Tests and Repair
If the dipper of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader drops on its own under load, there are three possible causes: a leaking piston seal in the ram, spool leakage in the excavator valve section, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV) in that section. The JCB service manual gives a test procedure that identifies the culprit before the ram is removed and stripped. Below are the test sequence, the permitted creep and the repair rules from Section E of service manual 9803/3290.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulic Pressure: Settings, Pressure Testing and Causes of Low Pressure
On JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders with a gear pump, the working pressure of the hydraulic system is limited by the main relief valve in the loader valve: 236–241 bar on machines up to serial number 964124 and 248–252 bar on machines from serial number 964125 (standard and high-pressure hydraulics). It is checked with a 0–400 bar pressure gauge connected to the loader valve test point, with the engine at 1500 rev/min and the oil warmed to 50 °C. Below are the settings, the test procedure and the reasons why pressure drops, taken from the JCB service manual (Section E).

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulics: Circuit Diagrams, Pumps and Relief Valve Pressures
Section E of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-14) deals with the hydraulic system of the JCB 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. It brings together technical data for the pumps and valve blocks, hydraulic circuits for machines of different build years, valve operation, fault finding tables, and the procedures for pressure testing and for overhauling the pump, valves and rams. The section PDF runs to 302 pages.

Cylinder drift on a JCB 3CX/4CX: the cylinder, the spool or the ARV
If the boom or bucket creeps down under load, oil is escaping from the «locked» side of a cylinder. There are three causes: a worn piston seal, leakage past the control valve spool, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV). Here is how to find the culprit before buying parts and how much drift is normal. The data comes from the JCB service manual for 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.
