For the JCB 4CX backhoe loader: dipper cylinder 561/60178, an aftermarket part.

Replacing the cylinder avoids a long repair: rebuilding an old cylinder with a scored barrel, a bent rod or worn eyes often takes more time and labour than fitting a new one. Before fitting, check the hydraulic oil; if it is dirty, change the filter and the oil if needed, or the seals of the new cylinder will soon wear too. Keep the hose ends and ports clean. The thread type and sealing rings of the hoses on the ports must match those of the old cylinder. On first start, run the cylinder through its full stroke several times without load to bleed it, since air left in the cylinder can damage the seals. The aftermarket cylinder has the stroke, diameters and eyes of the original cylinder under this number and comes painted with capped ports. After the change, compare its speed and force with the cylinder on the other side. The cylinder is chosen by part number.

Compatibility

The cylinder moves the dipper in and out. Other parts are in JCB hydraulic cylinders.

Fitting

Before removing the cylinder, lower the equipment to the ground or prop it and release the pressure; cap the hoses. Fit the new cylinder on its pins, grease them and fit the retainers, then connect the hoses. With the engine at idle, run the cylinder through its full stroke several times without load and check the oil level.

JCB 3CX and 4CX Dipper Ram Creep: Causes, Ram Creep Tests and Repair
If the dipper of a JCB 3CX or 4CX backhoe loader drops on its own under load, there are three possible causes: a leaking piston seal in the ram, spool leakage in the excavator valve section, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV) in that section. The JCB service manual gives a test procedure that identifies the culprit before the ram is removed and stripped. Below are the test sequence, the permitted creep and the repair rules from Section E of service manual 9803/3290.

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulic Pressure: Settings, Pressure Testing and Causes of Low Pressure
On JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders with a gear pump, the working pressure of the hydraulic system is limited by the main relief valve in the loader valve: 236–241 bar on machines up to serial number 964124 and 248–252 bar on machines from serial number 964125 (standard and high-pressure hydraulics). It is checked with a 0–400 bar pressure gauge connected to the loader valve test point, with the engine at 1500 rev/min and the oil warmed to 50 °C. Below are the settings, the test procedure and the reasons why pressure drops, taken from the JCB service manual (Section E).

JCB 3CX / 4CX Hydraulics: Circuit Diagrams, Pumps and Relief Valve Pressures
Section E of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-14) deals with the hydraulic system of the JCB 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. It brings together technical data for the pumps and valve blocks, hydraulic circuits for machines of different build years, valve operation, fault finding tables, and the procedures for pressure testing and for overhauling the pump, valves and rams. The section PDF runs to 302 pages.

Cylinder drift on a JCB 3CX/4CX: the cylinder, the spool or the ARV
If the boom or bucket creeps down under load, oil is escaping from the «locked» side of a cylinder. There are three causes: a worn piston seal, leakage past the control valve spool, or a leaking auxiliary relief valve (ARV). Here is how to find the culprit before buying parts and how much drift is normal. The data comes from the JCB service manual for 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders.
