A hydraulic accumulator consists of a nitrogen-precharged vessel and a diaphragm or piston separating the gas from the oil; it stores pressurised oil, damps pressure pulses, gives a short supply to the pilot circuit or brake system and lets the controls work for a while after the engine stops. Precharge pressure falls over time, and then the controls respond slowly, damping weakens or the arm cannot be lowered after the engine stops. An accumulator may serve a pilot circuit, a brake circuit or a ride-damping system, and each application has its own volume and precharge. The signs of lost precharge depend on the circuit: delayed controls in a pilot circuit, a hard brake pedal or warning lamp in a brake circuit. The accumulator is supplied new and charged; check the pressure on its label before fitting. The accumulator shell is steel. The accumulator is heavy. The accumulator is chosen by its number or code and its precharge pressure.

Fitting

Check the precharge at the intervals in the service schedule, since nitrogen loss gradually degrades the circuit. As a pressure vessel, a worn-out accumulator is disposed of only after its nitrogen has been safely released, without drilling the shell.
