In a gear pump, flow is set by the oil the gears carry per revolution and is proportional to engine speed. As the tooth tips, side plates and bearings wear, internal leakage grows; the pump delivers less flow, especially with hot oil, and the machine slows down. The pump body is cast, with flanged or threaded suction and pressure ports, and the suction hose and clamps must be airtight. Rotation is judged from the shaft end, and a pump turning the wrong way builds no pressure. During the change, check the drive coupling and shaft seal, clean the hydraulic tank and renew the suction strainer and filters. These steps let the new pump reach its full life. The pump is heavy and should be supported with a suitable lift during removal and fitting. Keep the pump ports capped until fitting. The pump label carries the manufacturer code and serial number, which can be used together with the machine maker's part number when ordering. Before fitting the new pump, find out why the old one failed: scored gears and worn side plates point to dirty oil, while pitting on the tooth faces points to cavitation.

Fitting

Tighten the pump bolts to the specified torque and check the suction hose clamps for air leaks. On first start, slowly run every hydraulic service through its full stroke several times; recheck the oil level and change the filter after the first hours of work.
