Bolts differ in diameter, thread pitch, length, head shape and strength grade. Head markings such as 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 show the grade, and a lower grade bolt may look the same but will stretch or snap under load. Some bolts have zinc plating or a factory applied thread-locker. The bolt is therefore chosen by part number even when the size matches, and it must be of the same grade as the old one.

Fitting

Before fitting the bolt, clean the threaded hole and remove any old thread-locker. Where required, apply the specified thread-locker or oil to the threads and tighten the bolt with a torque wrench to the specified value. In joints with several bolts, tighten them in a cross pattern and in stages.
