A retainer is a part that stops a pin, shaft or bearing from coming out of place or turning. In pin joints it is the ring, sleeve or bolted plate that holds the pin in its eye; in gearboxes and axles it is the rings and plates that locate a bearing or shaft. If the retainer is lost, the pin starts to work out of the eye or the shaft develops end float, and the eyes, bushes and gears are soon damaged. When the retainer is replaced, the wear of the pin or shaft it holds is checked too.
