The turbine wheel is driven by exhaust energy, and the compressor wheel on the same shaft pushes air into the engine. A failing turbo shows as loss of power, black or blue smoke, whistling, oil in the intake or exhaust and shaft play. Most failures come from oil starvation, dirty oil or dust passing the air filter; these causes must be cleared before a new unit is fitted. When ordering, give the engine serial number and the data from the old turbo's label. If oil has collected in the intake and intercooler after a turbo failure, clean them out as well. Because the turbo shaft spins at very high speed, oil cleanliness directly sets bearing life. The turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold by its flange; the oil feed and drain pipes and the intake and boost hoses connect around it. The wastegate actuator limits boost pressure. The turbo is supplied new.

Fitting
