The cylinder block is the engine's main body: it holds the cylinders, crankshaft bearing housings and the oil and coolant passages, and the head, sump, timing cover and flywheel housing bolt to it. A cracked block, frost or overheating damage to the water jacket, main bearing housings ruined by a spun bearing or a rod through the block call for a new block. A short block comes assembled with the crankshaft, pistons and rods, while the cylinder head and ancillaries are transferred from the old engine. Replacing the block can be cheaper than replacing the whole engine. The block is the heaviest and most expensive part of the engine, so crack testing and measurements come before the decision to replace it. The engine serial number may change with a new block, so the service records are updated. Clean the cooling and lubrication systems before connecting them to the new block. The block is supplied new. The block is heavy, so use suitable lifting gear to move and fit it.
