For the Perkins 1000 series (AK) engine: exhaust valve guide 02/202064, a genuine JCB part. The card also lists 3318A705, 994-279.

Inlet and exhaust guides can differ in length and shape; the guide is chosen to suit the valve type. After a guide is replaced, the seat is recut to it, because seat and guide must be on the same axis. The valve stem seal fits on the top end of the guide. The clearance between guide and stem must not be too small, or the hot valve can stick. If it is too large, the valve does not centre in its seat and starts to burn at the edge. The guide is made of cast iron or a bronze-based alloy, chosen for its wear properties.

Fitting

Drive the old guide out with a suitable drift and press the new one in to the specified height. Check the bore against the valve stem, then recut the seat and lap the valve. This is engine shop work. Check the guide height against the service manual figure.
