Inlet valve 3142H071 is an aftermarket part for the Perkins engine.
The inlet valve lets fresh air into the cylinder on the intake stroke and, seated in its seat, closes the combustion chamber during compression and combustion. The valve face and the seat in the head must seal. A worn or burnt valve causes loss of compression, hard starting and rough idle; stem wear opens up clearance in the guide and lets oil into the combustion chamber. The valve is held by collets and the valve spring: the spring closes it and the rocker opens it through the pushrod. Too small a valve clearance keeps the valve from closing fully so it burns; too large a clearance makes the valve gear tick. The valve head and stem are made of heat-resistant steel. The valve is supplied new.

Fitting
Before fitting, measure the stem-to-guide clearance and replace the guide if it is excessive. Oil the stem and slide it into the guide. Measuring valve recession against the head face shows the condition of the seat.
