Stem seals are usually replaced on all valves together; an engine needs one seal per valve. They can be changed without removing the head using special tools, and they are always renewed when the head is rebuilt. The seal bore must suit the valve stem. The seal lets just enough oil past to lubricate the stem in the guide and holds back the excess. Seals on the exhaust side run hotter and harden sooner. The seal rubber is an oil- and heat-resistant compound, which keeps it flexible for longer.

Fitting

Before fitting, cover the stem end with a protective sleeve so the seal lip is not cut on the collet grooves. Press the seal evenly onto the guide with a suitable tool, then refit the spring and collets. Check the valve clearances when the seals are replaced. Remove the old seals with pliers or a puller without damaging the guide.
