Engine sump 320/A4166 JCB Dieselmax, genuine

For the JCB Dieselmax 444 engine: engine sump 320/A4166, a genuine JCB part. The card also lists 320/04170, 320/04291.

The sump is also the lower cover of the block, sealed at its flange with a gasket. When replacing it, compare the positions of the dipstick tube and drain plug with the old sump; they can differ between versions. The drain plug at the bottom of the sump comes out at oil changes; if the sump is damaged, check its boss too. The dipstick tube lets you read the oil level in the sump. If the sump has been dented, the pick-up pipe and strainer inside may be damaged as well.

Fitting

Clean the block flange of old gasket and sealant, fit a new gasket or apply sealant and tighten the bolts evenly from the centre outwards. Fit the drain plug with a new washer and change the engine oil and filter. Tighten the sump bolts to the specified torque; overtightening distorts the flange. Fill with oil of the viscosity JCB recommends.
