Genuine JCB cylinder head gasket 320/02709 for the Dieselmax 444 engine; the card also lists 320/02616 and 320/02608. According to JCB parts records the current number is 320/02616, which supersedes 320/02709 and 320/02608.

The head gasket separates the combustion chambers, oil passages and coolant jacket between block and head. The photos show a multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket with openings for four cylinders. A failed gasket shows as coolant loss, bubbles in the radiator, oil and coolant mixing, white exhaust smoke and overheating. After overheating the head and block faces must be checked for flatness.

Compatibility

The gasket is used on JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders with the Dieselmax 444 engine. An aftermarket gasket of the same number is also available. JCB engine parts are in JCB Dieselmax engine.

Fitting

The faces are cleaned, the gasket goes on dry and the right way up, and the head bolts are tightened in the JCB sequence with the angle-torque figures. For work with the head removed, the SB top gasket set, which includes the head gasket, is the more complete choice.

JCB Dieselmax Engine in the JCB 3CX / 4CX: Builds, Technical Data and Servicing

Section K of the JCB service manual (publication 9803/3290-14) deals with the installation of the JCB Dieselmax engine in JCB 3C, 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. It gives the technical data for each engine build, the cold start heater electrics with their fault codes and the operation of the viscous fan coupling, together with the removal procedures for the radiator, expansion tank, fuel injection pump and the engine itself. The PDF runs to 30 pages.
