For the Perkins-engined JCB machines: thermostat RG 02/202474, a genuine JCB part. According to the product card, the thermostat is for the Perkins RG-series engine.

The thermostat is chosen by part number for the engine type (for example Perkins AB, AK or RG series, Cummins or Dieselmax) and opening temperature, as one that opens at a lower or higher temperature changes the engine's working temperature and must not be used. When it is replaced, its gasket or O-ring is renewed and the thermostat housing and bypass hose are checked. The thermostat can also be checked by heating it in water and watching the opening temperature with a thermometer.

Fitting

Before the change, let the engine cool and drain the coolant below the thermostat. Remove the thermostat housing and clean the faces. Fit the new thermostat the right way round (wax element towards the engine) with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. After filling and bleeding the system, run the engine and check that the top radiator hose heats up as the engine warms and the temperature stays normal.
