Coolant expansion tank 128/14093 Perkins, aftermarket

For the Perkins-engined JCB machines: coolant expansion tank 128/14093, an aftermarket part.

The tank is chosen by part number for the machine model and engine version, as size, ports and mountings differ. Other numbers on the card are versions of the same tank. When it is replaced, the cap, hoses and level sensor (if fitted) are checked too, and sediment inside the tank shows that the cooling system needs flushing. Also check the colour and clarity of the coolant in the tank: brown or oily coolant indicates corrosion or oil getting into the cooling system. The heat in the engine bay yellows the tank and makes it brittle over time, so when fine cracks appear on its surface the tank is replaced before it starts to leak.

Fitting

Do the change only on a cold engine, as opening a hot system can cause burns. Empty the tank, disconnect its hoses and any sensor plug and remove the mounting bolts. Fit the new tank, connect the hoses with new clamps and fill to the maximum mark. After the engine has been run up to temperature and has cooled again, recheck and top up the level.
