Axle shaft universal joint 40823 is an aftermarket part for the backhoe loaders with Carraro axles. This joint is used in the axle shaft (at the knuckle). The joint measures 27 x 71 mm.

A universal joint transmits torque between two shafts at an angle; its four trunnions carry caps with needle roller bearings. On construction machines universal joints are used in propshafts, at the knuckles of steered axles and in the hydraulic pump drive. Needle bearings that run dry or take in dust wear out: the joint develops play, clunks on moving off and vibrates, and if wear continues the joint can break.

Compatibility

Fitting

Press out the old joint with a suitable press or tool after removing the circlips; do not hammer the yoke hard. Press the new joint's caps in carefully so the needles do not shift, and fit new circlips. After assembly, grease the joint and check that it moves freely without binding. The joint comes new; leave the caps in place until fitting so the needles do not fall out. Fit the joint with the grease nipple facing the inside of the yoke.
