Steering column strut 998/10830 JCB 3CX/4CX, aftermarket

Steering column strut 998/10830 is an aftermarket part for the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders. This strut is used in the steering column tilt adjustment.

Gas struts are weaker in the cold and stronger in the heat, which is normal. Scratching or painting the rod damages the seal and lets the gas escape, so the rod is protected. A strut must not be opened or heated, and before disposal its gas is released following the maker's instructions. On a bonnet or rear window the strut is a safety part, as a bonnet that closes by itself while someone works under it can cause serious injury. A weakening strut is therefore replaced without delay.

Fitting

Before the change, prop the door, bonnet or window open with a separate support. Release the old strut's ends from their clips or bolts. Fit the new strut, usually with the rod pointing down, and lock the end fittings. After fitting, open and close the panel a few times to check it stays fully open. The prop holding the panel is not removed until the job is finished. A new strut's force settles after the first few openings.
