For the JCB machines: seat damper 400/F9020, a genuine JCB part. According to the product card, this damper is for the seat; the card also lists 40/906902 and 334/F0547.
The strut is chosen by part number according to length, stroke, force (in newtons) and end fittings: one that is too strong makes the door hard to close, while one that is too weak will not hold it open. Struts fitted in pairs (for example on each side of a bonnet) are replaced together. Gas struts need no maintenance, but their rods are kept clean and protected from knocks. A weakening strut shows when the open panel starts to sink slowly.

Compatibility
According to the product card, 400/F9020 is a gas strut. The card also lists 40/906902, 334/F0547. Fit is confirmed by the part number. The catalogue also has the aftermarket version of this part. Other parts are in Cab.
Fitting
Before the change, prop the door, bonnet or window open with a separate support. Release the old strut's ends from their clips or bolts. Fit the new strut, usually with the rod pointing down, and lock the end fittings. After fitting, open and close the panel a few times to check it stays fully open. The prop holding the panel is not removed until the job is finished. A new strut's force settles after the first few openings.
