Parking brake pads differ in shape, size and fixing: round and rectangular pads fit different calipers. The pads are usually changed as a set, as replacing one side only gives uneven clamping and can distort the disc. During the change, the disc thickness and surface are checked, the caliper pins are cleaned and the handbrake is adjusted again. After adjustment the parking brake is tested as the machine maker specifies. The parking brake disc and caliper are not protected from dirt, so the pads wear faster on muddy sites and the handbrake is checked more often on such machines. Oil or grease on the pads also reduces holding force; oily pads are replaced rather than cleaned, and the leak that let the oil in is repaired.
